This photogravure comes from an original photograph taken in Sicily in 1964

Ferdinando Scianna  (born 1943 in Bagheria, Sicily) is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential photographers of the postwar era. Renowned for his evocative black-and-white imagery, he has spent more than six decades documenting the complexities of human experience, capturing the spirit of Sicily and the Mediterranean with extraordinary sensitivity, intelligence, and visual elegance. His work moves seamlessly between photojournalism, portraiture, documentary photography, and fashion, always marked by a profound sense of narrative and a deep engagement with culture, memory, and identity.

A defining figure in Scianna’s career was Henri Cartier-Bresson, who recognized his exceptional talent early on and became both a mentor and a close friend. Their relationship was rooted in a shared belief in photography as a way of understanding the world through observation, intuition, and the decisive moment. With Cartier-Bresson’s encouragement, Scianna joined Magnum Photos in 1982, becoming its first Italian member. This milestone established him as a leading voice in international photography.

Throughout his distinguished career, Scianna has collaborated with prominent writers, including Leonardo Sciascia, and produced bodies of work that combine rigorous documentary insight with remarkable artistic vision. His photographs are celebrated for their emotional depth, humanism, and timeless quality, securing his place among the masters of contemporary photography.

PHOTO-GRAPHICA is a new Pig Prints’ proposal where photography and printmaking are integrated with photogravure.
Photogravure is an old photographic technique that involves the transfer of an image from a film negative onto a copper plate. The plate is then used to print an etching through a printing press.
A more contemporary version of the photogravure uses photopolymer plates rather than copper. This also results in a print that displays beautiful grey tones as well as deep velvety blacks.
